Yellow stains on stored blankets in humid basement?
So I stored a bunch of blankets in a cardboard box which I left in my basement in St. Louis. It is pretty humid, and now the blankets have yellow stains on them, and a musty smell. There doesn't seem to be any growth though, so I don't think it's mold. Is it mildew, or mold or just a stain? Are they safe to use again? How should I wash them?
I live in the st louis area as well and know all too well the horrors of the humidity here. For future reference, the only way you can store fabric in a damp environment is if you have a cedar closet that closes very tightly. I had one built to combat stains and mildew. Musty smells can be removed by adding a cup of vinegar to your wash load.
To get rid of yellow storage stains, I mix a teaspoonful of citric acid powder in a quart of water and it's instant homemade storage stain remover. Place the stained fabric on a white towel in the sink and drip the citric acid solution onto the spots. It will chemically react with the stain and carry it into the towel.
Finish by rinsing the fabric in water and wash as usual. Citric Acid (sometimes labeled as sour salt) is used in Jewish cooking. It can be found in the kosher food section of many supermarkets.
If citric acid isn't strong enough, try Oxalic Acid:
Powdered oxalic acid is sold as a wood bleach in most hardware stores. If the fabric is sturdy, try a teaspoonful of oxalic acid in a quart of water. Blot this on the stain until it's gone, rinse, and wash as you regularly would. It also removes "mildew" spots from clothing.
