What Sea Life is in the Great South Bay?
I go to Watch Hill on Fire island on my boat and I was just wondering what sea life is in the bay around there? Can I have a list os sea life there?
--The rapid population growth around the shores of Great South Bay has led to numerous environmental problems. Important juvenile habitat for fish species, in particular eel grass beds, has been entirely lost from the western reaches of Great South Bay, in particular where the waste water treatment plants of the western communities empty out into the water. In the mid-bay and eastern sections of the bay, storm water runoff, carrying with it pollutants and excess nitrogen from fertilized lawns and insufficient septic systems, has led to increases in algal blooms and other pollution-related issues.
At one point in time, Great South Bay provided many of the hard clams consumed throughout the region and even the country. However, as population impacts grew, habitat was lost and the clam population crashed, devastating the fishery and the communities that depended on it. From a high point of hundreds or even thousands of baymen working the waters of Great South Bay, now only a scant few can be seen ekeing out an existence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_South_Bay The Great South Bay (actually a lagoon) is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 45 mi (72 km) long, forming a large natural harbor on the southern side of Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. It is protected from the open ocean by Fire Island, a barrier island approximately 30 mi (48 km) long, as well as the eastern end of Jones Beach Island.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wpdms_ev26188_great_south_bay.jpg --------------- This boundary encloses regionally significant habitat for fish and shellfish, migrating and wintering waterfowl, colonial nesting waterbirds, beach-nesting birds, migratory shorebirds, raptors, and rare plants.http://library.fws.gov/pubs5/web_link/text/gsb_form.htm

Sea Life Aquarium –
Hi there! I read your captions and I just had to connect with you regarding Hawaii. I will never forget my first trip there – it was the time of my life. Though I went alone – it was a perfect place to find myself and regroup. You visited many of the places I went and also some places I did not. I LOVED the Road to Hana – I stopped and saw so many hidden treasures – waterfalls, bamboo forests..amazing. Botanical Gardens – where I hid a letterbox. Black Sand beach – didn't see one on Maui, but I did go to one on the Big Island. Burned my feet, but it felt so good after a swim. I even had a dolphin encounter (on Oahu) – Sea Life Park. Thank you for sharing your Hawaii experience. I actually saw your photo from Camp Verde (where I am heading in a couple weeks) and I just read on.. Peace.
The Sea Life Aquarium is a great place to go all year round! They have live feedings scheduled throughout the day that are super fun to watch!
