T-shirt Quilt, any advice?
About 6 years ago, my mother-in-law died of cancer. It was very sad. When they were going through her closet, I asked them to save anything that they had sentimental attachment to. I intended to make several quilts from her clothing and give one to each of her 3 kids and one to my father-in-law.
Well, I never did but this is the year I will finally do it! I've only made a couple of quilts before this. As I embark upon this sure adventure, does anyone have any advice for sewing old clothes into quilts? Some are knit t-shirts, others aren't. I think I know how, but as always, any advance advice is welcome.
Are lap sized quilts okay, do you think, or should I go bigger? Is the Lap Quilt the same size as a Crib Quilt?
Thanks!
Quilts are always whatever size you want them to be, though precut batting comes in various sizes. If you're trying to be frugal with batting, make the quilt about 2" smaller (length and width) than the precut batting.
Common batting sizes:

FWIW, I usually make lap quilts 40-45" square. But that's just a personal preference, not written in stone.
Quilts are traditionally done with woven fabrics... t shirts are made of jersey knits and will stretch on the crossgrain (side to side). If you're going to use jersey knits in a quilt, it's often best to use a good quality fusible interfacing on the back side of the jersey to stabilize it. In fact, any lightweight fabric (less than shirt weight) can benefit from fusing to interfacing.
I'd also choose a fairly simple block pattern for this, since you're mixing two kinds of fabrics. Do you have some ideas of what you'd like to do?
Snowball is often a good album quilt sort of block that's easy to sew -- you can also incorporate photos in the snowball center.

Snowball also plays well with other blocks; snowball and bow tie, snowball and nine patch are a couple of classic combinations.
