How did you play with your American Girl Doll?
Did/do you dress and undress her in new outfits? Did you act out scenes? Did you treat her as a person at any point, i.e. setting a place at the table. How has her role as a toy changed over time? Did you give her away or do you still have her? Did you ever send her to the hospital?
Personally I had a Molly doll for years that I loved, and saved all my money up to buy her things. Set her a place at the table, and kept her prominently displayed in my room. I even brought her to school sometimes. I'm trying to write a paper about the cultural influence of American Girl dolls on their owners, and to see how others' experiences varied from my own.
Thank you!!
I am a mother with a daughter who has dolls. I am also a mother that collects them for myself. So I will tell you about what I do and what I observe my daughter doing.
My daughter, when she was younger, would tow that doll everywhere. She has Kirsten and simply adores her. She would carefully get her dressed in pajamas at night and would sit reading with her. When she turned around 10 she wasn't toting her everywhere any longer. For some adventures she still takes a doll. She will take on on trips and when we visit with friends and family that also have dolls. They do act out scenes and pretend play. At home she plays with them still and makes up stories with her friends about what the dolls do in their own time periods. They will get on the internet to research out certain specifics and go act them out. They will set up rooms that show the dolls doing things and leave them that way for a few days.
For myself I have quite a few dolls. I will also set them up in different time periods or make clothing for them from different countries. I used them to display countries or themes that I teach in school or at scouts.
I like to still do their hair and dress them. It is fun to have someone not get angry with you as you do their hair and pull a little to hard. It is also fun to have a great display of interesting changes in girls lives from Kirstens era to today. Both in furnishings and clothing. I think it has been great to make history come alive for my daughter.
