Please help me I dont know what to do with this!!! HELP!!!?
Find the specific heat capacity of an unknown metal, if a 50 g. piece at 100C raises the temp of 100g of water from 20.0 c to 22.2 c. Using the table below what metal is the unknown?
HINT:
The temp change for the metal will be 100c to 22.2 c
Equate the heat lost by the metal= the heat gained by the water ( Cm mM DeltaTm= cw mw DeltaTw) Rearranging the equation: cM=(cw mw DeltaTw) / (mM Delta TM)
TABLE:
Metal ------- Specific heat capacity c
Water ------- 1.00
Copper ------- 0.092
Gold -------0.031
Iron -------0.12
Silver -------0.057
Tin -------0.052
Zinc -------0.093
Heat lost by the piece = heat gained by water.
Heat gained by water = 100*1* (22.2-20)
=2.2*100= 220 cal
heat lost by the metal = 50*sp heat * (100-22.2)
= 3890*sp heat
so specific heat = 220/3890 = 0.05655 = 0.057
So the metal is silver.
