Trying to save space - Pack & play for use as a crib and changing table?

With baby #2, space will be at a premium as the new baby will need to share the bedroom w/ its older sibling. This time I was thinking about using a pack/play instead of a crib & using it also as a changing table as well (instead of buying a separate changing table). Can babies/toddlers be changed on a pack/play until they’re ready for potty training? Has anyone ever used a pack/play for a permanent bed until the toddler is old enough for a regular bed? I never had a pack/play for my 1st so I don’t know what it’s like. Thanks for your input!

In my opinion a pack and play is a temporary thing. Like someone else said, the basinette part has a 15 pound weight limit, so that will last you like 2 months. Then after that your baby is basically sleeping on the floor (well, 2.5 inches off the floor). It's cold and drafty to sleep on the floor. I wouldn't want to do it. When my daughter was 4-5 months old she and I stayed with my sister for 6 weeks while my husband was on a series of long business trips (didn't want to be home alone all that time), and my daughter slept in the pack and play then. Everytime she moved, the nylon mattress of the P&P rubbed on the nylon covered frame and made a rustling noise. I had to sleep with ear plugs, and when it got closer to morning time the noise would often wake her up.

All in all, I don't recommend it. Get one of the cribs from a store like Ikea...they're much more compact than the big, frilly cribs. And your baby can have a real mattress and won't have to sleep on the floor.
